KITCHENER, Ont. - The Western Mustangs defeated the Ottawa Gee Gees in the Ontario University Fastpitch championship game 5-1 at Kitchener’s Budd Park on Sunday Oct. 19.
For the Mustangs in the championship game, Nicole Shillington (Kingston, Ont.) had two singles and a double, Kristina Lemon (London, Ont.) added a double, two singles and two RBI, and Dani Abdilla hit two singles and three RBI.
Lemon got the complete game win and finishes at 14-0 on the season.
Western got to the championship going undefeated in the round robin pool 3-0 by defeating McMaster, Toronto, and Guelph, and then out-scored rival Wilfrid Laurier 4-1 in one semi-final.
Offensively in the semi-final, Krista Davie (Harriston, Ont.) had two singles and two RBI, while Abdilla and Shillington each hit two singles. Meg Hewins (Burlington, Ont.) hit a triple for Western. Laurier beat McMaster 6-2 to pick up the bronze medal.
Abdilla won both the tournament top hitter (0.625 BA and six RBI) and MVP, while Lemon won four games and the Championship Game MVP.
At the 2008 Season Awards Banquet Saturday night Mustang left fielder, Em Cornelius and Lemon were selected as Ontario All-Stars.
The win makes Western the first school in the seven-year history of Ontario University Fastpitch softball to win the championship more than once.
The Mustangs also won in 2006 and now have five consecutive Ontario medals (2 Bronze, 1 Silver and 2 Gold) and 4 consecutive league championships.
Their 2008 record was 26-2.
With the win, Western has earned hosting rights for the 2009 Ontario championship tournament.
