Western’s Charles Fitzsimmons wins men’s individual, guides team to silver, while women win bronze

Lisa Boyko top female for Western, places 5th in individual

MARKHAM, Ont. - Charles Fitzsimmons shot a two-day total of 138 to win the Ontario University Athletics individual title at the OUA Championships presented by mikeweir.com on Oct. 20 at Angus Glen Golf Course.

Fitzsimmons (Toronto) finished the two-day tournament six-under-par, shooting a 68 on Day 2 (-4), capping off in fine fashion by sinking a 12-foot putt for the championship.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs team, they were close to an OUA gold medal but lost out in the tiebreaker with the fifth player scoring.
Western’s women finished in a tie for third place with Waterloo but won on the tiebreaking fourth-player score.

Ottawa and Western were tied for first in men's team scores at 590. The Mustangs earned a silver medal and came up from third place after Day 1 to do so.
"We could not be happier. For him to do that, he had to beat (Scott) Samuel going head to head with him both days," said Western men's head coach Jim Waite. "Capping it off with a great 12-footer, it was amazing competition between the two of them."

Western's team lost out in the first-place tiebreaker by three strokes.
"The team played extremely well today, shooting an even-par 288," Waite said. "It was great competition. To see it that tight through the top four, it is the tightest I have seen for that many teams being that close at the end of the championship."

Western’s women, which had won four previous OUA titles, won their fifth consecutive OUA medal. They have now medalled every season in OUA women’s golf competition.
“They tried out there,” said Western women’s coach Chris Dickson. “We weren't happy with the third-place finish, but they grinded over the three- and four-foot putts. That's golf.”

“This was Amy Williams' first OUAs, she was very nervous. She played better today, improving by 10 strokes which she and I were very happy about,” Dickson said. “It was Caitlin Jennings’ final university event... she will be missed.”

Dickson was quick to point out the honour of playing at Angus Glen, site of the 2002 Canadian Open PGA Tour event.

“The girls really enjoyed Angus Glen,” he said. “To play on this calibre of golf course, they enjoyed it. It's a tough golf course. They held a PGA Tour event on this course... it forces you to hit the ball straight and roll the putter well.”
