Jennings and Lebel lead Western women to second-place finish, men also runners up

Western 2nd in men's and wome's team scores at Gryphon Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Ont. - The Western Mustangs fought all day in the strong winds, rain and on the very fast greens at the Cutten Club to place second, once again behind the streaking Queen's Gaels at the Guelph Invitational on Oct. 5.

Western shot a total of 258 in women's play and the Mustangs men shot 304, just one shot behind first-place Waterloo. Full results.

The Mustangs men were led by a pair of Western student-athletes, as Charles Fitzsimmons and Johnny Hall both tied for fifth place shooting 75. The women's team was led by captain Caitlin Jennings and Katie Lebel shooting an impressive 84 and 85.

"Katie and Caitlin were both disappointed in their and the team's showing this past weekend at Waterloo. They wanted to turn things around and they did on a very difficult day," said head coach Chris Dickson. "Katie has been playing through a sore foot all season. The competitiveness in her comes out when she is one the course. She wants to play so well for the team. She has been very consistent this year."

Lisa Boyko shot a 89. Wesley Janzen shot what Dickson described as a "very impressive 93."

"I was very proud and happy for Wesley," Dickson said. "She is a very hard worker. This was her first tournament on the starting team. With being nervous on the first tee she went out and shot a 43 on the front side. She stumbled with a few holes on the back but all in all she played well. Coming off the 18th green, I had to give her a high five for the way she played on a very tough day."
