Golf - 2009 Season in Review

The Mustang men earned a silver medal at the 2009 OUA championships, while the women finished third

Season Recap - Men

The Western Mustangs men’s golf team came about as close as you can without winning the OUA championship in 2009. In fact, they finished in a dead tie with Ottawa after shooting a two-day total of 590. Unfortunately for the Mustangs, the tie-breaker did them in, as the Gee-Gees came away with the title by virtue of a better-scoring fifth player (by three strokes). Still, it was a great finish for the Mustang men, who entered Day 2 of the competition in third place.

Western’s Charles Fitzsimmons (Toronto, Ont.), meanwhile, won the OUA individual title after posting a two-day total of 138 to finish 6-under par. The fourth-year player sunk a 12-foot putt to clinch the title – finishing one stroke better than University of Toronto player Scott Samuel (Oakville, Ont.).

Other top individual finishes during the 2009 regular season: Johnny Hall (Langton, Ont.) – Silver at WLU/UW Invitational, Silver (Tied) at McMaster Invitational … Paul Gallo (Thornhill, Ont.) – Silver (Tied) at McMaster Invitational.

Season Recap - Women

The 2009 women’s golf season saw an end to the Mustangs’ reign at the top. However, the Western women, who came into the year having won four straight OUA championships, still managed to come away with a third-place finish – giving them a medal in every OUA championship event since women’s golf became an OUA sport back in 2005. Contrary to the men’s team, the Western women benefitted from the tie-breaking process. After tying for third with Waterloo with a two-day total of 526, the Mustangs were awarded the bronze medal thanks to a better score with their fourth player.

Lisa Boyko (Mississauga, Ont.) was the top Western player at the championships, as the second-year student finished fifth in individual scoring with a two-day total of 168. Boyko only missed one fairway in the opening round en route to her fifth-place finish and an OUA second-team all-star nod.

Other top individual finishes during the 2009 regular season: Caitlin Jennings (Vancouver, BC) – Gold at Queen's Invitational … Katie Lebel (Sarnia, Ont.) – Bronze at St. Thomas Invitational.
