Western fencers prepare for OUA Championships after successful OUA West Qualifiers at McMaster

Feb. 13-14: OUA Fencing Championships, Carleton University, Ottawa

LONDON, Ont. - As the Western fencing team gets ready for the OUA championships, it's time to take a look at their results from the West Qualifiers hosted by McMaster.  

The universities in the West Division include Western, Toronto, McMaster, Brock and Ryerson. 

All six Western teams advanced to the OUA Championships to be hosted by Carleton Feb. 13-14 in the nation's capital.  

The Mustangs men’s epee and men’s sabre teams both won all their matches and are ranked first in the West Division.  

The women’s epee and women’s foil won three and lost one match and are ranked second, while women’s sabre won two and lost one match and are also ranked second.

Men’s foil won two and lost two very close matches and are ranked third in the West Division.  

For the individual competition the Top 8 fencers advance to the OUA Championships and Western has five of our 12 men and seven of our 12 women advancing

Men’s Epee: Mark Jones 1st, Jordan Patterson 3rd; Yi Kang 9th and Ian Fan 20th both missed the cut.
Men’s Sabre: Colin Lee 3rd, Eric Katzman 6th, and Zev Smith 8th; Andrew Wang 9th, missed the cut.
Men’s Foil: Tyler Brown 9th, Noel McDonald 10th, Dylan Lamb-Palmer 13th, and Spencer Lee 16th, all missed the cut.
Women’s Epee: Jennifer Hughes-Large and Andrea Csiba advance; Kelly Tse and Amy Hsiao missed the cut.
Women’s Sabre: Celina Lin and Vas Economopoulos advance, Doria Keung and Clara Yim missed the cut.
Women’s Foil: Salomeh Ahmadi, Zoe Ramirez-Reeves, and Heather Witlox advance, Michelle Fernandes missed the cut.
