Southwestern Ontario rivals, Lancers and Mustangs face-off in West semis

LONDON, Ont., - Western Mustangs are set to face off against the Windsor Lancers at Thompson Arena beginning Wednesday Feb. 24 in the OUA's best-of-three West semifinal series.

The Mustangs, who finished in first place in the OUA West, have had a perfect 3-0 track record this season against the seventh-place Lancers. In just three games played against Windsor this season, the Mustangs have scored a total of 13 goals and allowed just five. 

Top scorers this season for the Mustangs against Windsor have been Yashar Farmanara (West Vancouver, B.C.), Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford, Ont.) and Kevin Baker (Georgetown, Ont.).

Farmanara currently sits eighth in OUA standings in the playoff season with one goal and four points. In games against Windsor, the right winger scored two of Western’s 13 regular-season goals. 

Top Mustangs scorer Turkiewicz finished fifth in the regular season OUA scoring with 43 points and an outstanding 20 goals, two of which were against Windsor.

Baker has been out to show his stuff as well this season. In the regular season standings, he finished in 19th place with 33 points and 16 goals. Playing the Lancers alone, the centre from Georgetown, Ont., has scored an impressive four goals. 

On defence, Ryan Martinelli (London, Ont.) has been very effective for Western in the 2009-10 campaign. With two goals and an assist already in the post season, the senior blue-liner from London, Ont., and son of former Mustangs coach Barry Martinelli is tied for the lead in defenseman scoring in the OUA post-season.

It will be a battle between the pipes as both Keyvan Hunt (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Windsor's Jim Watt have been terrific in the post-season.

On offence, Lancers forward Brett Oliphant has scored two of his club’s five goals against Western. The forward has 8 goals and 19 points in regular season.

Meanwhile, Kyle Tront leads all OUA rookies in scoring with three goals and two assists for five points, good for a third-place tie in the OUA overall. Two of his goals have come on the powerplay, and two are game-winners.
