LONDON, Ont - Two Western Mustangs were at the centre of the most successful finish by Team Canada at the FISU World University Cross Country Championships in Kingston, Ont.
Runner Kyle O'Neill (Vienna, Ont.) and Western Mustangs Cross Country head coach Bob Vigars represented the Mustangs and their country as Canada played host for the event.
Vigars had the opportunity to add to his already lengthy resume and he did just that with the best finish ever by the men's and women's teams at the event. The women's team finished in third place overall, while the men's finished in fourth.
"I can tell you that in spite of my record number of 42 years coaching, and the record number of team championships (42) in Mustang athletics, and the fact that this was my 8th international appointment, this was most special and I will cherish it," said Western Mustangs and Team Canda Head Coach Bob Vigars.
Japan and Great Britian claimed the overall titles in the men's and women's divisions, respectively. Everyone was surprised at how well Canada actually did at the event.
"The achievement was just remarkable when one considers all the world runs and that the other continents here like Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania have the wide range of sport and running in particular as a higher profile," said the head coach. "We are rather narrow in our attention to the breadth of sport here in Canada."
With the strong finish there is no shortage of pride coming from Vigars.
"I am very to have had the privilege and honour to head up this very talented and dedicated Team Canada." said Vigars.
Canada's best finish prior to the third and fourth place finishes was a pair of seventh place finishes in 2002 and 2004.
