FREDERICTON, N.B. - Western's men sat in third place at the end of Day 1, May 31, just three strokes out of first spot at the 2010 Canadian University/College Championship conducted by Golf Canada at Kingswood Park.

In the individual standings, three Mustangs - Johhny Hall, Andrew Zanatta and Alex Hyrcko - were tied for 6th at -1  (71) . Mustangs Charles Fitzsimmons and Greg Gabel were tied for 76th at 7+ (79).

Play was suspended on the second day due to weather and will resume on June 2.

The University of Montreal and the University of British Columbia sat atop the standings after the first round of play finished Monday, 

In the men’s competition,Western is three strokes behind the University of Montréal took which the first round lead carding a team score of 289, led by Philippe-André Bannon and Benoit Gordon, who both shot 69 and lead the individual rankings.  

Defending men's champions, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds are just two strokes behind at 291.

On the women’s side, six-time defending champions, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds have taken up where they left off last year, leading the field with a team score of 297, with Kylie Barros shooting a 73. University of Victoria is just six strokes behind, led by Anne Balser who shot 75. Rounding out the top three is the University of Montreal, at 337.

Play continues June 1 at Kingswood Park with second round action getting underway at 7:30 a.m. (ADT).

In all, 156 male and female golfers from post-secondary institutes across Canada travelled to Fredericton, N.B., to compete for both team and individual titles at this year’s event.  The field is comprised of 20 men’s and 10 women’s teams as well as six individuals. 

The team championship involves five-player teams competing over 72 holes with the top four individual scores counting towards the team total. After 54 holes, the field will be reduced to the top 10 men’s and top five women’s teams, as well as individuals within 15 strokes of the lead. Individual champions will also be crowned after 72 holes.

As part of Golf Canada’s Pathway to Champions, both the male and female individuals achieving the low score after 72 holes of play will earn an exemption into the 2010 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship and the 2010 Royale Cup Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship respectively.
