Mustangs continue exhibition play against Eastern Michigan

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's basketball team continues its preseason schedule with two games this week against the Eastern Michigan Eagles. The Eagles, a NCAA Division 1 team from the Mid-American Conference, will play the Mustangs Tuesday Aug. 31 at 7 p.m. and then again at 2 p.m. on Wed. Sept 1. Both games are now at Alumni Hall.

The Mustangs currently have a 2-1 record in preseason action against NCAA opponents. Western split two games against IUPUI and won handily over the University of Tennessee-Martin. Eastern Michigan will be a difficult opponent having an overall record of 22-9 with an 11-5 conference record last season.

Western has been getting strong performances from two newcomers to the program in the first three preseason games. Matteke Hutzler, of Napanee, Ont., is a fifth-year transfer from Simon Fraser that has made her presence felt in the paint. She scored a game-high 28 points in the win against IUPUI and in the win against UTM she grabbed 14 rebounds. In the frontcourt, Laura Dally, a first-year guard from Sarnia, Ont. has played very well in all three preseason games, her first as a Mustang, averaging 17 points per game.

The two games this week will be played at Alumni Hall and not at Thames Hall as originally scheduled. Following these exhibition games the Mustangs will have a quiet September before the Alumni game on Oct. 1 at Alumni Hall and two preseason tournaments, one in Edmonton and the other in Moncton.
