LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs will return to the commercial radio airwaves with Newstalk 1290, CJBK on board to broadcast every regular season and playoff football game in 2010.
Beginning Sept. 1, with the Mustangs home opener against the Laurier Golden Hawks, the AM 1290 station in the London region will carry eight regular season games, both at home and on the road.
Former Mustangs head coach Larry Haylor, the winningest coach in CIS football history, will provide colour commentary and analysis, while Western alumnus Russ Courtney will do the play-by-play - Mike Stubbs will broadcast the opener due to a scheduling conflict.
Haylor, the head coach of Team Canada for the 2011 IFAF Senior Men's World Championships in Austria, says this opportunity will be a great way to see some of the top talent in the OUA.
"No question this will help me with some decision-making for the selection of our national team and help me to identify the top talent in the OUA," Haylor says. "I'm excited to be able to see a very talented group of football players compete for Western and to be able to break down what's happening on the field for listeners - whether they're in the stadium listening along, in the car, in their own home or listening online."
Tom Cooke, general manager for CJBK and Astral Radio London, says a return to broadcasting Mustangs games is a "no-brainer."
"Given the strong history between CJBK and the Western Mustangs, it was a very easy process to get the football team back on the airwaves," Cooke says. "Not only will this renewed relationship benefit the football team and its fans but it will also give Mustangs fans an opportunity to hear frequent news on the 37 talented teams on campus."
"We know our listeners want the Mustangs back on the air and we are delivering. It's going to be a very exciting season."
