Gryphons edge out Mustangs at OUA Baseball Championships

Fans at George Taylor Field for the first night of the OUA Championship got to witness a fierce pitching duel between two of the league’s top hurlers as the Western Mustangs took on the Guelph Gryphons in St. Catharines. The Gryphons came out on top, edging out the Mustangs with a 1-0 victory.

Adam Paish (Mississagua, Ont.) had a great showing for the Mustangs, going eight innings, striking out five and walking two without allowing an earned run. Lucas Borges was even more impressive on the Guelph mound, going the complete nine innings, striking out 12 and walking one while allowing six hits.

Chris Mireault had the strongest day offensively for the Mustangs going two for four with two singles. Guelph’s Sean Molony lead all hitters with three hits in four at bats and scoring the game’s lone run.

The day’s only scoring play came in the sixth inning when Molony started the bottom half of the frame off with a double. After advancing to third on a Ryan Thompson single, Molony was knocked in by Kyle Westwater after a Western error.

Western now moves on to play the Brock Badgers tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. after the host Badgers lost 6-5 to the defending champion Toronto Varsity Blues. The winner of tomorrow morning’s game then goes on to play the loser of the Guelph-Toronto game at 4:00 p.m.
