LONDON, Ont. – A team effort helped propel the Western Mustangs men's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over the Guelph Gryphons this afternoon at Huron Flats Field. The Mustangs and the Gryphons faced off once this season already with Guelph taking the match 3-2. Today's contest marked the last game of the 2013 regular season for the Mustangs.
"I feel great about the win," said head coach Rock Basacco. "We've been working hard all year, and scoring goals has been a bit of a problem for us. But today everything just seemed to go our way."
The first half of the contest saw the Gryphons hit the scoreboard first, as Guelph's Robbie Murphy netted the first goal of the game to put the Gryphons up 1-0. The Mustangs battled strong offensively though, controlling the ball in Gryphon territory for a large part of the half.
Their efforts proved successful when Mustangs Taso Bujouves scored Western's first goal at the 28
th minute, to even out the score 1-1. Mustangs Vince Caminiti followed up just two minutes later, racking up another Mustangs goal to give the purple and white a 2-1 lead over Guelph.
The Mustangs continued their momentum and kept the scoring streak alive when Alex Lewis hit the back of the Gryphon's net just three minutes later, for the third Mustangs goal of the game, setting a 3-1 score going into the break.
In the second half of play, the Gryphons battled to cut the Mustangs' lead, but Western continued their strong offensive pressure on the Guelph defense. At the 79-minute mark, Luke Sewell tallied up another Mustang goal furthering the lead 4-1.
The Mustangs were up, but by no means slowing down, as Christian Douglas netted the fifth and final Mustang goal just four minutes later to give Western a 5-1 advantage and a 4-point victory over the Gryphons.
With the win, Western now advances to a 7-6-3 record in the OUA West Division, while Guelph falls to 8-3-5 on the season.
