Mustangs claim first place at Stratten Division Championships

GUELPH, Ont. – It was a banner weekend for the Mustangs swimming team as both the men's and women's squads won first place at the Stratten Division Championships on Saturday. The men's team finished first in the team standings with 1,010 points while the women's team had a total of 1 ,03 points to claim the victory.

The Mustangs were dominant in their relay matches, sweeping both the men's and women's divisions, taking first in the 4x200m freestyle and 4x200m medley relay, as well as the 4x400m freestyle and medley relays.

Many strong individual performances helped to contribute to the team's collective win. With many swimmers earning second and third place finishes, several swimmers had first place individual swims on the day. Notably, Kelly Hotta finished first in two of her events, the 200m freestyle with a time of 2:05.22, as well as the 100m freestyle with a winning time of 58.58. Four other Mustangs swimmers also had first place finishes: Peter Serles won the 100m butterfly with a time of 56.58, Emma Sproule had a winning time of 1:03.00 in the 100m backstroke, while Robert Wise and Alex Paulins turned in first place finishes in the 1500m and 400m freestyle events respectively. Wise's finishing time in the long distance swim was 15:57.94 and Paulins' time in his event was 4:04.49.

The Mustangs swim team will not have much time to celebrate the win, as they have a busy weekend ahead. The team returns to action Thursday, November 21 at the University Challenge in Toronto, the first of three meets that weekend. The team then follows up with the Canada Cup in Toronto, before returning home to host the Nothers Meet at the Western Student Recreation Centre.
