Western wins fifth in a row to close out crossover portion of schedule

KINGSTON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs continued their winning streak last night, pulling off a great second half to defeat the Queen's Gaels 72-57.

Maintaining an equal pace in the first and secodn quarters, the Mustangs were able to defeat the Gaels after an excellent fourth quarter - netting 27 points to finish off the game.

"After a slow start and a poor first half, we were able to get into a groove on offence in the second half and take charge of the game," said head coach Bradley Campbell.

Alex Brzozowicz (Chicago, Ill.) contributed 19 points along with two rebounds and one assist.

Keenan Jeppesen (Stoney Creek, Ont.) and Ryan Barbeau (Belleville, Ont.) added 15 points each.

"Defensively we did a great job and were able to knock down some open shots in the second half," said captain point guard Matt Curtis.

Western continued its strong play with a 100-38 smattering of the RMC Paladins in the final portion of the crossover portion of the 2008-09 regular season, against OUA East schools.

"Today's game was a solid finish to the OUA East crossover," Campbell said. "We were able to finish with a solid record that we can build on for the new year."

Jeppesen led Western with 24 points, while Brad Smith added 21. The Mustangs outscored the Paladins 30-4 in the fourth quarter.

"I am very pleased with our play of late. I think it bodes well for the rest of our season. "

The Mustangs will now take time off for exams and to refresh for OUA West league play.
