MALE: Jordan Townshend, Men's Baseball (Pitcher, Fourth Year, Huron College)
Pitcher Jordan Townshend threw a complete game shutout to lead the Western Mustangs to series-opening win in the OUA baseball championships.
The Mustangs went on to win in two straight games, and Townshend's gem of a performance in Game 1 was a major factor.
The fourth-year pitcher threw 15 strikeouts, tying an OUA playoff record.
Townshend turned in a stellar outing to lead Western to a 6-0 win over the Golden Hawks at Labatt Park
The left-hander allowed just two hits and struck out a career-high 15 for the complete-game shutout in what may have been his last OUA appearance in a Mustangs uniform.
He threw 152 pitches – 98 for strikes.
"It [pitch count] was way up there,” said Townshend, who lobbied with Western manager Mike Lumley to stay in the game until the end. “I told him that I’m not coming out. I’m finishing this game. This is my last start, and I want to finish it.”
“What can you say? That was just outstanding,” said Lumley of Townshend’s performance. “He’s been up around that pitch count once before this year (a no-decision in an eventual 14-inning loss to McMaster on Sept. 9). But I mean, what are we saving him for? This is it.”
