MALE: Niko Mavrikos, Soccer (Midfielder, Victoria, B.C. / Third Year / BMOS)
Niko Mavrikos scored seven goals in two teams to lift the No. 5 Mustangs to a pair of victories this past week as Western improves to 6-0 in OUA play.
Mavrikos, a junior from Victoria, B.C., netted all five goals for the Mustangs in the 5-0 win on Saturday afternoon and contributed defensively to the team's fifth shutout of the season. Western has only allowed two goals so far on the season.
Mavrikos opened the scoring just three minutes into the game putting away a nice through ball from Andrew Chan with a low shot to the back post. The score remained 1-0 through to the half.
In the second, Western came out looking to increase the offensive pressure and Mavrikos answered the call. He scored four more goals in 17 minutes in the 48th, 55th, 63rd and 65th minutes.
Earlier this week against Windsor, Mavrikos scored two goals in the 3-2 win over Windsor to give him seven goals in the last three games entering the Sept. 22 game at Laurier.
Coach Rock Basacco said he was thoroughly impressed with Mavrikos' performance this past week.
"I believe it is a Western record to score five goals in one game, he has seven goals in two games," Basacco said.
Next up for the Mustangs are the Laurier Golden Hawks on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in Waterloo. Western will play its next home game on Saturday Sept. 25 at 3:15 p.m. at TD Waterhouse Stadium.
The two previous GoodLife Fitness Athlete of the Week men's winners this year were men's soccer goalkeeper Andrew Murdoch (Burlington, Ont.) in Week 2 and men's soccer striker Eric Amato (Toronto) in Week 1.
