Matteke Hutzler recorded a pair of double-doubles in a weekend split against nationally ranked Carleton, a 67-65 loss, and the Ottawa Gee-Gees, a 58-35 win.
Defensively, Hutzler was tremendous while recording game highs in scoring and rebounding in both games.
In the fourth quarter against the Ravens, with Western trailing by 12, Hutzler switched her defensive assignment to shutdown the Ravens point guard Alyson Bush who only scored three of her 20 points in the fourth.
She recorded a game-high 22 points and game-high 10 rebounds in the two-point loss, the first of the season for No. 4 Western, adding one assist and one steal. Six of her rebounds were on the offensive glass.
The next night against Ottawa, she helped her squad to limit the Gee-Gees to just eight second-half points. She added a game-high 12 points and game-high 12 rebounds in the victory, helping Western to improve to 5-1.
Hutzler added two assists, two steals and a block in the win, shooting six-for-nine from the field and recording four of her 12 boards on the offensive glass.
Through six games, Hutzler averages 15.3 points per game and 7.7 rebounds per game.
