LONDON, Ont. – Kevin Baker (Georgetown, Ont.) scored two goals and goaltender Anthony Grieco (Brampton, Ont.) made 39 saves for the win as the Western Mustangs men’s hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 4-1 on Oct.22 at Thompson Arena.
The remaining two Mustangs goals were claimed by Geoff Killing (Embro, Ont.) and Yashar Farmanara (West Vancouver, B.C.). Brett Oliphant (Woodslee, Ont.) claimed the only Lancer goal.
Windsor was called for interference only 1:35 into the first period and presented the Mustangs with the perfect powerplay opportunity. Western’s powerplay line, consisting of Baker alongside linemates Aaron Snow (Windsor, Ont.) and Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford, Ont.), wasted no time on the man advantage as Baker wired a shot past Lancer goaltender, Frank Dayus (Tecumseh, Ont.), to take a 1-0 lead.
Western continued to dominate the play throughout the first frame, adding Killing’s powerplay goal for a 2-0 lead at the first intermission. On a two man advantage, Turkiewicz hit Snow with a pass directly in front of the net, but Snow couldn’t finish. Luckily, Baker was there to redirect the rebound past Dayus.
Still on the powerplay, Farmanara’s shot from the point snuck through Dayus’ legs as he was screened by Mustang forward Kyle Lamb (Port Coquitlam, B.C.). The Mustangs went 4/5 on the powerplay while limiting Windsor to 1/8.
Grieco’s eight period shut-out streak was broken after Oliphant’s powerplay goal. Grieco has only allowed two goals on 139 shots and is listed as the number one goalie in the OUA.
Head coach Clarke Singer said he is hoping to keep the team’s momentum going despite only one game this weekend.
“We’ve got to keep working hard. We’ve got a couple practices and a couple off-ice workouts here Friday, Saturday then give the guys Sunday off and try to get back to a regular routine,” Singer said.
Western plays host to the Guelph Gryphons on Fri. Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
