Western men’s volleyball shutout competition this weekend

Oct. 24: Western 3 Ryerson 0 (25-16, 25-8, 33-31); Oct. 25: Western 3 Toronto 0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-19)

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs men's volleyball team had a great start to their season this weekend with a pair of 3-0 wins over both Ryerson and Toronto.
 
On Oct. 24, the Mustangs traveled to play Ryerson in their season opener and beat the host team 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 33-31).
 
Western’s home opener took place on Oct. 25 with a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-21, 25-19) over Toronto.
 
Against Toronto, Western had contributions from all players on the floor, notably from Eric Simon (London, Ont.) with 16 points. Simon was surpassed in points only by Toronto’s Steven Kung (Toronto), who had 17 points. Both players had 13 kills.
 
Mathew Waite (St. Thomas, Ont.) contributed 12 points, while Mathieu Poulin (Winnipeg, Man.) and rookie Phil James (Ottawa, Ont.) both had 8 points.
 
Matthew Gibson (Oshawa, Ont.) provided solid setting for his teammates and he was named “Player of the Game” for Western.
 
The Mustangs start off the season undefeated (2-0), while Ryerson and Toronto are both winless (0-2).
 
Up next for Western is a home game against McMaster on Oct. 31 at 8:00 p.m.
