Ridgebacks edge Mustangs in tight affair

Western loses 3-2 on Saturday to visiting UOIT, falling to 4-6-0-1

LONDON, Ont. -- Jaclyn Gibson picked a perfect time to notch her first goal of the season. The UOIT forward beat Western goalie Lindsey Martin (London, Ont.) through the five-hole at 10:46 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Ridgebacks to a win over the Mustangs at Thompson Arena Saturday evening.

Gibson's goal capped off a period in which the Ridgebacks dominated much of the play en route to improving to 4-6-0-1 on the season. The Mustangs, meanwhile, dropped to the same record, and both teams now sit tied with Toronto and Brock in a four-way tie for fifth place in the OUA standings.

Leading 1-0 in the second, Sarah Worthington scored her second goal of the game at the 11:17 mark of the period to put UOIT up 2-0.

The Mustangs responded, though, as Tawn Rellinger (Colorado Springs, CO) scored her second goal of the year 14:27 into the second period to cut the deficit to one. Katherine Dillon (Oshawa, Ont.) then tied the score with her second of the year with 1:09 remaining in the period. After taking a pass from Ashlyn Karapalidis (Richmond Hill, Ont.), Dillon went streaking down the left side and snuck a shot past Ridgebacks goalkeeper Emma Thompson.

Aside from the loss, Western also saw its top scorer's streak come to an end. Left-winger Ellie Seedhouse (Whitby, Ont.) had previously gone a league-high six straight games with a goal and seven straight with at least one point. Both streaks were snapped as Seedhouse was held off the scoresheet on Saturday.

The Mustangs are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 22, for a game against the visiting Queen's Gaels at Thompson Arena. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
