Killing's OT goal extends Mustang winning streak to 14

Dec. 3: Western 3 Windsor 2 (OT)

LONDON, Ont. – Geoff Killing (Embro, Ont.) scored Western’s overtime game-winning goal to defeat the Windsor Lancers 3-2, extending the Mustangs winning streak to 14 games.

Regulation goals were scored by Aaron Snow (Windsor, Ont.) and Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford, Ont.). Lancer goals were claimed by Brett Oliphant (Woodslee, Ont.) and Steve Ferry (Richmond Hill, Ont.).

The Lancers took a one-goal lead six minutes into the first period after Oliphant slid a rebound puck past Mustangs goaltender Keyvan Hunt (Coquitlam, B.C.). Windsor held the lead for the remainder of the first frame despite Western’s three failed powerplay opportunities.

Midway through the second period, Turkiewicz obtained control of the puck in the offensive zone and made several attempts to release a clear shot. After battling off numerous attackers, Turkiewicz made a quick pass to Snow who buried a shot past Lancer netminder Jim Watt (Edmonton) to tie the game at one.

Turkiewicz netted Western’s second goal seven minutes later after receiving the puck down low and wiring a shot top shelf over Watt’s shoulder.

Western held the 2-1 lead until Lancer’s Ferry capitalized on a Mustangs mistake and beat Hunt to tie the game. Ferry’s goal forced the game into overtime.

In overtime, both teams went back and forth with equal scoring opportunities. Killing broke out of Western’s zone and streaked down the right wing towards the Lancer’s net. Killing brought the play to a halt when he stopped in the offensive circle and let a wrist shot go, beating Watt over his shoulder.

Hunt earned the victory in net finishing with 25 saves.

The Mustangs will return for regular season play in the New Year, hosting Lakehead for back-to-back games on Jan. 8 and 9. Western also plays in an exhibition tournament in late December in St. Catharines, Ont., hosted by the Brock Badgers.
