LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's lacrosse team conitnued their opening weekend with a heartbreaking 12-11 loss to Toronto and closed out with a 13-2 win over McMaster.
Western (2-1) ended Laurier's 26-game unbeaten streak a day earlier with a 9-5 win. Summer Windley (Kitchener, Ont.) made 17 saves.
Lindsay Doxtator (Southwold, Ont.) led the way over the weekend with 15 points.
"It was a great start to the season, the coaching staff is very pleased," said head coach Dave Hastings. "It was a tough loss to Toronto. In retrospect, you think about it, but you cannot dwell on it. For a first outing, it was much better than we had last year."
"We are way ahead of where we wanted to be at this point in time in the season."
In the 12-11 loss to Toronto, Doxtator ignited a comeback attempt scoring two second half goals, including the game-tying goal with just over three minutes left to tie the game at 11. She finished the game with three goals and one assist. Fresman forward Lauren Crape (Calgary, Alta.) had four goals, while another rookie Emmi Morris (Brampton, Ont.) had two goals and three assists.
Windley had 12 saves, while Christina Burns (Orillia, Ont.) scooped up six loose balls. Beth Turowec (Oshawa, Ont.) and Nicole Pullen (Orangeville, Ont.) added one goal each.
With four goals and three assists, Doxtator led the way in a 13-2 win over McMaster later in the morning Sept. 20, as Western held the Marauders to just two goals in their second half of back-to-back games.
Crape, Morris and Pullen added two goals each, while Turowec, Carrie White (Mississaugah, Ont.) and Kelsey Crean (Orangeville, Ont.) added singles. Summer Windley got the win in net for the Mustangs.
Brittany O'Halloran (Kitchener, Ont.) made 10 saves.
Western travels to Toronto to play McGill next Saturday Sept. 26 at 4 p.m. and then plays Queen's and Laurier on Sunday Sept. 27 at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. respectively.
