LONDON, Ont. - Western Mustangs forward Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford, ON) scored two goals in Western's 8-3 victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves, the second game of a back-to-back series at Thompson Arena for the Rock the Rink event with 2,347 fans in attendance.
The remaining Mustangs goals were netted by Geoff Killing (Embro, ON), Matt Piva (Maple, Ont.), Patrick Lee (Sharon, ON), Joe McCann (Essex, ON), Kevin Baker (Georgetown, ON) and Aaron Snow (Windsor, ON). Thunderwolves goals were scored by Scott Dobben, Ryan McDonald and Andrew Wilkins.
Killing put the first point on the scoreboard for Western after a shot down low ripped past Lakehead's Alex Dupuis (Thunder Bay, Ont.). Turkiewicz scored his first goal of the game less than one minute later on the powerplay after Snow cycled the puck deep in the offensive zone and hit Turkiewicz with a pass out front.
Piva finished the first frame with Western's third goal piling a loose rebound into the net after Dupuis stopped Mustangs defender Scott Aarssen's (London, ON) initial shot.
Lakehead's Dobben notched their first goal on the powerplay from the bottom of the circle on a sharp shot past netminder Keyvan Hunt (Coquitlam, BC). Hunt turned aside 29 shots for the win.
Head coach Clarke Singer said he was very impressed with Hunt's role in this weekend's games.
"In both games he outplayed their goaltending and goaltending is the most important part," Singer said.
Turkiewicz's second goal came after he released a quick shot past Dupuis off a pass across the crease from Snow. Turkiewicz's goal followed shortly after two other Mustangs goals and Dupuis was replaced by Kyle Moir (Calgary).
In the last minute of play in the second period, Baker broke away on a short handed opportunity and streaked past a Thunderwolves defender to put the first goal past Moir and increase the Mustangs lead 7-1 heading into the final frame.
Snow claimed Western's final goal on the powerplay wiring a shot past Moir. The Mustangs went 4/13 on the powerplay.
Lakehead capitalized on two of Western's defensive mishaps to finish the contest at 8-3.
Singer said these two wins will, "hopefully springboard us forward and I'm pretty happy with the effort overall."
In the late stages of the game, the Thunderwolves paid the price for some chippy play. Defender Mitch Maunu (Thunder Bay, Ont.) received a match penalty for checking to the head and defenceman Kalvin Sagert (Abbotsford, B.C.) was assessed an aggressor penalty, a fighting major and a game misconduct with six seconds remaining.
The Mustangs (16-2-0) will play host to the UOIT Ridgebacks on Fri. Jan. 15 at Thompson Arena.
