LONDON, Ont. - Western Mustangs head coach Clarke Singer will try for career win 250 as his team goes for win No. 17 in the 2009-10 season.
The Western Mustangs (16-2) host the UOIT Ridgebacks (6-11-1) on Friday, Jan. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at Thompson Arena and Singer will attempt to become apart of an exclusive group, looking for his 250th win as a head coach in the CIS.
Since becoming the head coach of the Mustangs men's hockey team, Singer has put together an impressive record of 249-73-10 to put him in 10th place all time for CIS men's hockey coaching wins, and in fourth place for active coaches.
Though the accomplishment is a big one for any coach, Singer says the current season is what matters most.
"I heard some stuff circulating that I was approaching the mark, but you know it's more something that I'll look at down the road and enjoy," Singer said. "Right now, it's just about this season and winning and the goals we have as a team."
Singer wouldn't be the fastest to make it to 250 wins, though he has risen up the all time wins list at a quick pace, doing so in 333 games over 11 seasons as the Mustangs head coach. He would be the second fastest coach, based on CIS league records, to reach the mark. Rob Daum of Alberta won his 250th CIS game with a 5-2 win vs Calgary on Nov. 27, 2004. The 250th win came in his 328th game during his 10th season as the Golden Bears head coach.
Coming into Friday's game, the Mustangs are fresh off of back-to-back wins against the Lakehead Thunderwolves last weekend, out-scoring them by a combined 15-5.
Meanwhile the Ridgebacks have dropped three straight games being out scored 14-2 in that time, but this is no excuse for the Mustangs to take the game lightly.
"It's more about the team, and how they've played that's led to success," said Singer. "We've been improving all season, and we're just going to focus on ourselves and what we can do to win, not worry about opponents' records or anything like that."
The Mustangs will be right back in action the next day on Saturday, Jan. 16 when they host the York Lions at 7:30 p.m., also at Thompson Arena.
