Win streak ends at 16 in loss to UOIT

Jan 15: UOIT 6 Western 4

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs (16-3) had their 16-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the UOIT Ridgebacks (7-11-1) on Friday Jan. 15, losing by a score of 6-4.

The game was competitive until the very end, when Ridgebacks forward Kyle Wetering (Pickering, Ont) put home an empty net goal with just four seconds remaining to seal the win.

Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford. Ont.) had a goal and two assists in the effort for the Mustangs, while Aaron Snow (Windsor, Ont.) added two assists of his own.

Mustangs goalie Keyvan Hunt (Coquitlam, B.C.) was pulled in the second after allowing three goals on 11 shots. New addition Josh Unice (Holland, Ohio) got his first taste of action for the Mustangs, logging 35 minutes in the latter half of the game, making eight saves on 10 shots and earning the loss.

"It was a combination of things that led to our loss. From our powerplay to our defensive zone coverage, there were some weak points," said Western Mustangs head coach Clarke Singer.

The Mustangs were 1/4 on the powerplay. They had possession of the puck for much of the game, but were unable to capitalize on enough opportunities as Ridgebacks goaltender Jeff Dawson (Bracebridge, Ont.) turned away 29 shots on route to the win.

With the loss, Singer will have to wait before he records win number 250. That mark is not one of importance to Singer though, as he said he is already concentrating on the next game and getting his team back on track.

"It's never fun to lose, but it is a learning experience and the loss shows that anyone can win in this league," said Singer. "We have another game tomorrow against another tough opponent and it will be a good test to see how we rebound."

The Mustangs will get a shot at revenge against the Ridgebacks on Saturday Jan. 23 when they host their third annual Jack Frost Cup at the John Labatt Centre.

Western will be back in action Saturday Jan. 16 hosting to the York Lions at 7:30 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
