LONDON, Ont. - Mustangs head coach Clarke Singer earned his 250th career win in Western's 4-2 victory over the York Lions on Jan. 16 at Thompson Arena. Singer has coached with the Mustangs for 11 seasons and his 250th win came as his 334th game, excluding non-conference games.
Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford, Ont.) notched two goals for the Mustangs and remaining Western goals were scored by Jason Swit (Mississauga, Ont.) and Yashar Farmanara (West Vancouver, B.C.). Lions goals were scored by Chris Jones (Grafton, Ont.) and Tyler Harrison (Whitby, Ont.).
York's defender Riley Brand (Bradford, Ont.) was called for a boarding penalty midway through the first frame after a hit on Turkiewicz. The sophomore Western forward retaliated with a powerplay goal after he walked out front and roofed a shot past Lion's netminder David Davenport (Bradford, Ont.).
Western was presented with another powerplay opportunity two minutes later and increased the pressure on the Lion's penalty kill unit. Aaron Snow (Windsor, Ont.) moved from the point to make a clear pass to linemate Kevin Baker (Georgetown, Ont.) who made a cross-ice pass to Turkiewicz. Turkiewicz released a quick one-timer past Davenport for his second goal of the night. Western's powerplay unit is ranked second in the OUA.
After two quick Mustangs penalties, York's powerplay worked down low in the offensive end attempting to bury one past Western's goaltender Josh Unice (Holland, Ohio) on a 5-on-3 rush. The Lions scored a powerplay goal after a shot was tipped past Unice to make the game 2-1.
The second frame remained scoreless despite a physical match with five infractions handed to York and three given to Western.
York opened the scoring in the third period after Turkiewicz was stripped of the puck in the neutral zone and Lions forward Tyler Harrison (Whitby, Ont.) brokeaway for a one-on-one against Unice. Harrison beat Unice on a low shot blocker-side to tie the game 2-2.
The Mustangs responded, reclaiming the lead after defenceman Swit cycled the puck down low to Turkiewicz who made a quick pass back to Swit on the point. Swit wired a shot through traffic past Davenport making it a 3-2 contest.
Farmanara netted a late empty net goal to seal the win with eleven seconds left in the game.
Unice turned aside 30 shots for his first full game as a Mustang earning his first CIS win.
Singer said he was extremely happy with the result.
"We have had a lot of great players and great guys here, they are all part of it, they do all the work. They worked very hard tonight and it's very satisfying. And hopefully we can look forward now to get better over the next games," Singer said.
As of Jan. 13, Singer ranks fourth for active CIS men's hockey coach with career wins. Singer is also listed as No. 10 for all-time CIS men's hockey wins since 1962. His overall record including non conference games sits at 288-116-14 with a win percentage of .706.
The Western Mustangs (17-3-0) will travel to Brock University on Jan. 22 for a 7:30 p.m. contest before returning home to host the third annual Jack Frost Cup on Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. against UOIT at the John Labatt Centre.
