LONDON Ont. - One day after falling to the league leading Wilfred Laurier Golden Hawks (20-0) by a score of 2-1, the Western Mustangs women's hockey team got a 2-1 win of their own, beating the Waterloo Warriors in a shootout, on Jan. 24 at Thompson Arena.
The game was a chippy affair from start to finish, with 19 total penalties split between the two teams.
Ellie Seedhouse (Whitby, Ont.) had the lone regualtion time goal for the Mustangs, and it was Chantal Morais (Guelph, Ont.) and Meghan Hewins (Burlington, Ont.) in the shootout who both dangeled their way to beat the Warriors goalie Kahla Stern (Paris, Ont.), and win the game.
"We really needed two points, no matter how you looked at it," said Western Mustangs women's hockey head coach Paul Cook.
Western Mustangs goaltender Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) stopped both shots that she faced in the overtime, and made 24 total saves during the game.
The give the Mustangs a very important two points heading into the tail end of the season. With a 9-10-0-3 record, the Mustangs sit in 6th place in the OUA.
It was one of two game on the weekend for the team, and they faced off with the Waterloo Warriors with a lot of emotion from their previous days game.
"We played the number two team in the country (the Wilfird Laurier Golden Hawks) to a stand still," said Cook."They got one goal on a five on three and another that just went off one of our players and in, so I was really impressed with how our kids dug deep."
Though they fell to the undefeated Golden Hawks, the team was highly motivated before facing off with the Warriors. A lot of that motivation and confidence came from a likely source, their head coach.
"What i did was challenge them to duplicate their play, the same way they played against (Wilfrid) Laurier and it's all I can ask," Cook said.
Up next the team plays host to the York Lions on Jan. 30 at Thompson Arena, puck drop goes at 4 p.m.
