Martinelli notches two in Western's 8-5 loss to the Thunderwolves

Jan. 30: Lakehead 8 Western 5

THUNDER BAY, Ont. – Ryan Martinelli (London, Ont.) contributed two goals as the Western Mustangs fell 8-5 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in the second game of a doubleheader series on Jan. 30.

Remaining Mustangs goals were scored by Aaron Snow (Windsor, Ont.), Scott Aarssen (London, Ont.) and Geoff Killing (Embro, Ont.). Thunderwolves Dan Speer and Matt Caria each scored a pair while remaining Lakehead goals were notched by Shandor Alphonso, Mark Soares, Scott Dobben and Kris Hogg.

Despite defeating Lakehead in the first back-to-back series while playing host on Jan. 8 and 9, the Thunderwolves took both games this weekend to the Mustangs and the two teams are now tied for first place in the West conference of the OUA.

Western and Lakehead have split the season series 2-2, but Western holds the goal differential tiebreaker at +3 (20 GF, 17 GA in four games).

Western’s powerplay unit scored two goals on nine man-advantage opportunities where as the Thunderwolves earned three powerplay goals on eight opportunities.

The Mustangs play three more away games before their final regular season game at home on Feb. 13. Western will travel to Windsor on Wed. Feb. 3 with the hope of reclaiming first place. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
