Lancers called, Mustangs answered, extend win streak to 11

Jan. 29: Western 3 Windsor 0

LONDON, Ont., - The Western Mustangs stormed to a 3-0 win in an intense game against the Windsor Lancers at Alumni Hall on Jan. 29. It was the second half of the White Out double-header for Haiti relief, and the two men’s teams played an extreme call and answer game.

Western has now won 11 straight games and will host Guelph on Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. in their Seniors Night at Alumni Hall.

At the start, it looked like Western’s men were going to be unable to keep up their winning streak. Windsor took the lead 8-4 in the first set.

“Windsor played tough tonight,” said assistant coach Jeff Weiler. “They were really motivated to take our number one seat. We were not ready for that.”

After a tough call, the men came back with a fury taking the lead, and inevitably wining the first set 25-23. The second set became intense with an alternating point pattern. Halfway through the set, the Mustangs gained a small lead 8-6, but the Lancers answered and tied up the score. The men pulled through and answered anything that came over that net landing a final score of 25-22.

“We did not play the way we are capable of playing,” said Weiler. “But our veteran players Eric Simon (London, Ont.) and setter Matthew Gibson (Oshawa, Ont.) played really well, and that is what we need; our senior players playing at a higher level.”

The third set was played exactly like the second. With each team fighting for the win, alternating point for point throughout. It seemed as though neither team would let the other gain any sort of lead. Towards the very end of the set, Western finally gained a three-point lead and used this to triumph over Windsor 25-22 making this their 11th straight win.
