LONDON, Ont. - Powerhouse junior
Keaton Turkiewicz (Brantford, Ont.) notched two goals and one assist in Western’s 6-0 victory against the York Lions on Oct. 16 at Thompson Arena.
Remaining Mustangs goals were scored by
Yashar Farmanara (West Vancouver, B.C.),
Julian Cimadamore (Concord, Ont.),
Kyle Lamb (Port Coquitlam, B.C.), and
Geoff Killing (Embro, Ont.).
Turkiewicz began the Mustangs scoring streak with his first goal coming less than five minutes into the frame. Linemate
Aaron Snow (Windsor, Ont. )planted himself in front of the net, screening Lion’s goaltender Travis Rolheiser (Edmonton), allowing Turkiewicz an open shot.
Farmanara used his fast speed to capitalize on an open lane through the slot before wiring an unexpected shot past Rolheiser.
Just over one minute later, rookie Cimadamore streaked into the offensive zone and caught Rolheiser off-guard with a quick shot, taking a 3-0 lead over the Lions.
York tried desperately to fight their way back into the game, but their desperation landed two players in the penalty box during the same play. Western’s powerplay unit wasted no time earning the fourth goal on a two-man advantage after a shot from Killing. Only 40 seconds later, while still on the powerplay, Turkiewicz scored his second goal of the night on a one-time shot.
Western’s special teams dominated the ice going 3/11 on the powerplay and holding York 0/10 on their powerplay opportunities.
The Mustangs were held to five goals until midway through the second frame when Lamb tipped Turkiewicz’s shot past Rolheiser, earning the final goal of the game.
Netminder
Anthony Grieco (Brampton, Ont.) stood his ground in net, turning aside 31 shots for a shutout and the win.
Western hosts Laurier University on Oct. 22 for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
