Coming off strong tournament, Mustangs poised and ready for regular season

Oct. 22: Guelph vs. Western, 8 p.m.; Oct. 23: McMaster vs. Western, 8 p.m.

LONDON, Ont. - With the departure of OUA player of the year Eric Simon, the Western Mustangs men's volleyball team will look to a younger core of returning players to guide them in the OUA this season.

The Mustangs finished 2009-10 with a 15-5 regular season record and lost in the OUA Final Four to the eventual champion Queen's Gaels. There were some bright spots from the season with first-year player Phil James earning OUA Rookie of the Year. Mathieu Poulin was also honoured for his play, earning a spot on the OUA second-team all-star list.

Added to the Mustangs is highly touted recruit Garrett May, who won gold at the world junior beach volleyball championships this past summer in Turkey. The Mustangs have meshed well so far in exhibition play winning their first tournament of the year.

Western went to Ryerson and beat the host Rams twice, including a 3-1 win in the finals. Reid Halpenny was named the tournament MVP with Poulin being named to the tournament all-star team.

The Mustangs recently recorded a 2-1 record at the 24th annual Queen's Invitational tournament, facing some of the nation's top competition. Western finished tied for first with Brandon and Trinity Western, but the Bobcats from Brandon won the tournament tiebreaker of having played the fewest sets. Western beat Brandon in the tournament game between them 3-2.

In the other two games at the tournament, the Mustangs lost a close match 3-2 to Trinity Western and swept last year's OUA champion, the host Queen's Gaels, 3-0. Poulin and Mathew Waite were named to the tournament all-star team for their outstanding play throughout the three games.

Western will get to start the season at home on Oct. 22 and 23 with games against Guelph and McMaster. Both games will be played at Alumni Hall and start at 8 p.m.
