Rookie Saunders powers Mustangs' attack on weekend

Oct. 23: Toronto 3 Western 2; Oct. 24: Western 4 York 1

The Western Mustangs improved to 2-3 on the season after a dominating 4-1 victory over the York Lions on Sunday night.

Rookie defender Michelle Saunders of Oakville, Ont., had two goals and two assists on the weekend, three on the powerplay.

She scored twice and added an assist in Sunday's 4-1 win over York, with rookie Olivia Ross getting the win in net and making 33 saves.

On Saturday at Toronto, the Varsity Blues edged Western 3-2. Rookie Marianne Filson scored to give Western the lead midway through the first period, but Toronto scored three unanswered, including two on special teams, and held on for the 3-2 win.

Sydney Kidd scored in the closing seconds on the powerplay.

Jessica Ulrich made 38 saves in the loss.
