LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs have booked a ticket to the OUA semifinals after hammering UOIT 18-6 in women's lacrosse on Friday morning in hail, rain and chilly conditions at City Wide Fields.
Western, the defending OUA champion, will face Queen's in one semifinal, while Toronto will face powerhouse Laurier.
Both semifinals are at 4 p.m. on Friday at City Wide Fields, with the winners advancing to Saturday's championship at 8 p.m.
Against the Ridgebacks, Western had goals from eight different players en route to victory.
Emmi Morris led the charge with five goals and an assist, while Larissa Boychuk (2G, 3A), Kristen Stafford (2G, 3A), Nicole Pullen (2G), Ali Childs (2G), Lauren Crape (2G, 1A), Adrianna Clapp (1G) and Kelsey Crean (1G) also factored in on the scoring.
Freshman netminder Cait Mancuso got the win in the Western net, while Ashley Le Lievre was strong in the Ridgebacks net in the loss.
Emily Uza, who had a strong game with several takeaways, solid defence and relentless pressure, paced the Ridgebacks with four goals and two assists. This is UOIT's first year of OUA women's lacrosse competition.
Western scored three goals six minutes in, including two from Morris, and built a 5-0 lead.
Strong defence and great transition play allowed them to stretch the lead to 9-2 at halftime.
Western extended the lead to 15-3, rotating all their players through the lineup. They put on a stall-technique in the fourth quarter, slowing the play down to cruise to victory.
In other quarter-final action, Toronto edged Guelph 9-5, and Queen's smashed McMaster 15-3.
Toronto's Breanne Gillie tallied three goals and added one assist, while former Mustang Kristin Smart also netted three goals for the Varsity Blues.
