LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs (10-0-2) men’s hockey team lost their first home game 5-4 in overtime to the Toronto Blues (3-6-3) on Nov. 19. Western has only lost 2 games this season, both of which have been overtime losses.
Western’s goals were earned by Chris Corbeil (Oakville, Ont.), Kyle Lamb (Port Coquitlam, B.C.), Jason Furlong (London, Ont.) and Scott Aarssen (London, Ont.).
Toronto’s goals were scored by Blake Boddy (Ajax, Ont.), Zack Fenwick (Toronto), Robert Kay (Orono, Ont.), Anthony Bergin (Scarborough, Ont.) and Byron Elliott (Burlington, Ont.).
Corbeil scored Western’s first goal after fighting off a hook in front of the net. Blues’ goaltender Garrett Sheehan (Cremona, Alta.) stopped the first two Mustangs shots but could not grab the third attempt as Corbeil lifted the puck into the top half of the net.
With five seconds left in a powerplay, defenceman Adam Nemeth (Amherstburg, Ont.) rushed into Toronto’s zone and wired a shot on net from the bottom of the circle. The puck bounced off of Sheehan before being redirected through a scramble of players in front of the net, eventually finding the back of the net. Lamb was credited for the goal and Western carried a 2-0 lead into the second frame.
Toronto started the second period seeking revenge and scored a powerplay goal less than four minutes into the frame. Boddy streaked down the left wing and cut across the front of the net forcing Mustangs netminder Josh Unice (Holland, Ohio) from post to post. Boddy slipped the puck just past Unice’s skate to bring the contest within one goal.
Furlong countered Toronto’s goal as he skated towards the Blues’ net and both Blues defenders cut off his skating lane, forcing a shot. Furlong ripped a shot through the two defencemen and past a screened Sheehan for a 3-1 lead.
Western secured a three-goal lead five minutes into the third period on the powerplay when Aarssen ripped a shot from the point to beat Sheehan.
The Blues battled back scoring two goals in 30 seconds for a 4-3 score with 13 minutes left in the game. Bergin surprised Unice and notched the tying goal unassisted with only five minutes remaining in regulation.
The Mustangs fought off a penalty during the final two minutes of the tied 4-4 contest, but the Blues carried the momentum into the extra frame and notched the game winning goal 2:31 into overtime.
Toronto won despite being outshot by Western 54-25.
