LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs women’s hockey team lost 4-1 to the Laurier Golden Hawks on Nov. 27 at Thompson Arena.

Katie Dillon (Oshawa, Ont.) scored Western’s only goal at the beginning of the third frame. She skated wide to the left side and then quickly cut in and hit the bottom left corner.

Laurier’s first goal was scored on the powerplay by Katherine Shirriff (Carrying Place, Ont.) and assisted by Tammy Freiburger (Wingham, Ont.). Alannah Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) wired a shot from just inside the blue line to score their second goal. On another powerplay, Fiona Lester (Peterborough, Ont.) blasted the puck into the top corner – she was assisted by Candice Styles (Orangeville, Ont.) and Shirriff.

Western had a 5 on 3 powerplay opportunity at the end of the second period, but were unable to capitalize. They had one close shot, but Liz Knox (Stouffville, Ont.) made a fast stick save.

Abby Rainsberry (Petrolia, Ont.) scored Laurier’s fourth goal on a two women advantage. She was assisted by Vanessa Schabkar (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Candice Styles (Orangeville, Ont.).

The game was rough and full of penalties. There were 18 in total as both teams took nine.

Laurier had 35 shots on Olivia Ross (Huntsville, Ont.) and Western had 16 shots on Knox.

Tomorrow the Mustangs will battle the Waterloo Warriors at 2:00 p.m. at Thompson Arena.
