The No. 5 Western Mustangs beat rival Queen's Gaels 3-2 on Saturday evening in Kingston, Ont. to take a two-game lead in the OUA standings.
The Mustangs were down two sets to one before winning a tight fourth set and using that momentum to take the fifth and final set.
Garrett May led the Mustangs attack with 19 kills, an ace and a solo block.
Mathieu Poulin's play was strong with 15 kills, eight digs, three aces, a solo and two assisted blocks.
Western won the first set 25-18 before losing the next two sets 25-20 and 25-22. With their backs against the wall they won the fourth set 26-24 and dominated the fifth set winning 15-7.
The Mustangs are undefeated on the season sitting atop the OUA standing with a 9-0 record. The next closest teams are McMaster at 8-2 and Queen's now 7-2 on the season.
Western would end the first half of their season with a perfect 10-0 record as they would dispose of winless RMC 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The Mustangs won the first set 25-23, dropped the second by the same score, before tightening up their play to take the next two sets 25-19 and 25-22.
Western will start the new year on the road at Ryerson on Jan. 7 at 8 p.m.
