Gidomski’s two goals not enough to lift Mustangs to victory
Nov 28: Waterloo 4 Western 3
LONDON, Ont. – The Western Mustangs (3-11) lost in overtime against the Waterloo Warriors on Sunday Nov. 28 at Thompson Arena.
Both teams came out strong and the entire first period featured end-to-end action. The Mustangs had many chances at the beginning of the frame, but were unable to get a shot away. On their first powerplay, they hit the goal post twice, and were very close to scoring on a tip in front of the net.
Waterloo opened the scoring and got their first goal on a two on one – directly after Western had killed off a penalty. Karen Vanderhoek (Burlington, Ont.) slid the puck over to Kelly Toms (Ennismore, Ont.) who backhanded the puck in on the left side passed Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.). Ona Mezenberg (Owen, Sound, Ont.) also assisted the goal.
The Mustangs battled back as Lindsay Gidomski (Mississauga, Ont.) scored her first goal of the game at the beginning of the second period, assisted by Brittany Buck (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Chantal Morais (Guelph, Ont.). The rest of the period remained scoreless and the Mustangs and the Warriors ended the second period tied 1-1.
It was an exciting and action-packed third period. Gidomski scored again giving the Mustangs a lead, with another assist from Morais. Emily Canham (Scarborough, Ont.) then blasted another shot in the top corner on an assist from Carly Rolph (Guelph, Ont.).
The Warriors came fighting back and Julia Endicott (Toronto, Ont) scored Waterloo’s second goal. The defenseman walked right in from the blue line and scored on a low left corner shot. Shortly after, Brittany Holland (Lisle, Ont.) tied up the game with assists from Kate Wagner (Sauble Beach, Ont.) and Elora Brennerman (Minesing, Ont.).
With around 2 minutes left in the game, the Mustangs had an exciting powerplay opportunity but were unable to score.
Karen Vanderhoek (Burlington, Ont.) scored the game-winning goal for the Warriors with 2:48 left on the clock in overtime, assisted by Nicole Hébert (Toronto, Ont.) and Jessica Tracey (Woodslee,Ont.)
