Laura Dally in the lineup, the Western Mustangs cruised to an 84-54 victory over the Laurentian Lady-Vees at Ben Avery Gymnasium in Sudbury, Ont., on Friday night.
Western (1-0) was led by
Jenny Vaughan with 31 points, two steals, two assists and three rebounds.
The No. 4 nationally ranked Mustangs shot 59.4% from the field.
Fifth-year forward
Matteke Hutzler was held to just four points and two rebounds, getting into early foul trouble.
Western led 21-17 after the opening quarter, as Vaughan closed the period out with a jumper off steal and a drew the foul, turning the Lady Vees turnover into a three-point play.
The Mustangs stretched their lead to 12 points, leading 42-30 at the half.
Western led by as much as 15 points, 49-34, in th ethird, and continued to lead in double-digits at 58-46 after three quarters. The Steph Barrie squad stretched the lead to 20 at the midway point of the fourth quarter, and ended up winning by 30 points, 84-54.
Katelyn Leddy and
Rebecca Moss added 14 points a piece off the bench, and freshman
Lacey Knox chipped in with 10 points.
