The No. 4 Western Mustangs overwhelmed by the York Lions Saturday night in a 64-41 Mustangs win at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Early in the contest, the Mustangs capitalized repeatedly on holes in the Lions defence and found multiple open three-pointers for sharpshooters like third-year guard Rebecca Moss (Waterloo, Ont.), who hit a trio of treys on 3-of-7 shooting in the game.
The Mustangs (2-0) also found success on the offensive boards, earning many second-chance points. Matteke Hutzler (Napanee, Ont.) capitalized on these chances to lead all players with 23 points, adding eight rebounds.
The Lions (0-2) managed to make things interesting for most of the first half as rookie Llyandra Kerr (Markham, Ont.) and third-year guard Kara Smith (Aylmer, Ont.) scored on multiple jumpers in the face of a tough Mustangs’ zone defence. Both players finished with six points in the game.
The second half was when things broke open for the Mustangs as they clamped down on defence, holding the Lions to only five points in the third quarter. The Mustangs refused to let up even with a big lead and they pushed their lead to an insurmountable 26 points in the fourth quarter.
