LONDON, Ont. - Rookie Steeve Reese (London, Ont.) notched two goals and an assist in the Western men’s hockey team’s 6-4 victory over the Brock Badgers. The Mustangs win completes the 2010 portion of the season.
Remaining Mustangs goals were scored by Matt Paltridge (Tecumseh, Ont.), Yashar Farmanara (West Vancouver, B.C.), Kyle Lamb (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) and Brandon Greenside (London, Ont.). Farmanara earned two assists and Lamb earned one. Badgers four goals all came on the powerplay from Kaine Geldart (Kingston, Ont.), Joey Pell (Dryden, Ont.), C.J. Dickson (Thorold, Ont.) and Matt Abercrombie (Sarnia, Ont.).
The Brock Badgers powerplay unit challenged the Mustangs in the first period of play, notching the first goal of the contest. Badgers’ Abercrombie launched a pass from along the boards in the offensive zone towards the net. Geldart was tangled up with a Mustangs defender in the crease but managed to break loose and redirect the puck into the net past Western’s goaltender Josh Unice for a 1-0 lead.
Western countered Brock’s attack as the forward line created pressure down low in Badgers territory. Keaton Turkiewicz held possession of the puck and threaded a pass to Paltridge on the blueline. Paltridge wired a shot through traffic past Brock’s netminder Kurt Jory (Brandon, Man.) to tie the game at one.
Brock scored their second goal on the man-advantage after Pell (Dryden, Ont.) threw a shot on net and past a screened Unice. Farmanara responded for Western 40 seconds later when Reese slid the puck to the front of the net from behind the goal line. The puck bounced off the Badger defenceman and Farmanara was there to tap in the open puck.
Less than one minute later, Reese tallied his own goal as he broke through the Badger defencemen for a one-on-one against Jury. Reese lifted a shot over Jory’s left shoulder to give Western a 3-2 edge.
With under one minute left in the first frame, the Badgers cycled the puck on another powerplay opportunity. Dickson walked down low and roofed a shot over Unice’s shoulder to tie the game at three heading into the second period.
The Mustangs were called for another infraction 30 seconds into play in the second period. Abercrombie wound up from the face off dot to the right of Grieco and wired a shot through traffic into the back of the net for a 4-3 lead.
Western scored their first powerplay goal of the game midway through the second frame. The powerplay unit worked the puck around and the loose puck made its way back to the point. Scott Aarssen grabbed the puck and fed Adam Nemeth a pass along the blueline. Nemeth put a shot on net and Lamb was planted in front of the net to tip the shot through Jory’s legs.
Five minutes later the Mustangs kept their offence rolling and defenceman Greenside walked over the blueline and wired a shot to the top right corner for a 5-4 lead.
Both teams battled hard in the third period as Western tried to hold the lead and the Badgers looked to tie the game. The Mustangs scored the only goal in the third period to secure a two-goal lead with 4:46 left in the game.
Western’s netminder Anthony Grieco secured the win after replacing Josh Unice at the end of the first frame. Grieco turned aside 11 shots as the Mustangs outshot the Badgers 35-25.
The Mustangs (13-0-3) will travel to Brock University (6-5-5) to start the 2011 half of the season on Jan. 7 at 7:15 p.m. where the Badgers will be looking to avenge this loss.
