The women's basketball team travelled to Windsor to compete in the Lancer Holiday Classic and opened play with a tough 56-45 win over the Ottawa Gee-Gees.
Both teams showed they were a little rusty from the holiday break as neither team was able to shoot the ball effectively from the field. Despite poor shooting, the mustangs put a solid stretch together in the second quarter to build a 33-21 halftime lead.
In the second half the Mustangs increased their lead to 18 before Ottawa fought back in the fourth quarter to pull to within 11 points on two occasions. Western was able to grind through a tough shooting night where they were only able to connect on 4 of 22 attempts from beyond the arc.
The Mustangs were led by 3rd year guard Jacklyn Selfe with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists while teammate Jenny Vaughan chipped in with 14 points.
The Mustangs will face off against Trinity Western Thursday December 30th at 5pm. The nationally 5th ranked Mustangs' next home game will be next Wednesday January 5th against the #1 ranked Windsor Lancers. Game time is 6PM.
