GUELPH, Ont. – Mustangs forward Joe McCann (Essex, Ont.) scored a pair of goals but it was not enough to overcome the Guelph Gryphons as Western fell 4-3 on Feb. 4.
Patrick Ouellet (Baie-Comeau, Que.) notched Western’s remaining goal, however a fourth was out of reach and with the loss the Mustangs move to 19-7-0. To secure home-ice advantage for the post-season, Western must win both its remaining games (at UOIT on Feb. 12 and vs. Wilfrid Laurier on Feb. 13) and hope for Waterloo and Lakehead to lose three out of their last four.
Josh Unice (Holland, Ohio, U.S.A.) made 32 saves in the loss as Western had solid goaltending for the second straight night. On Feb. 3, Keyvan Hunt (Coquitlam, B.C.) stopped 37 shots in a 6-2 road win over Windsor.
Western has lost three of their last four road games but look to their final away game against the UOIT Ridgeback’s on Feb. 12 for a victory. The final regular season home game goes Feb. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Thompson Arena, with the playoffs starting at home on either Wednesday Feb. 17 or Thursday Feb. 18, with the opponent TBA.
