Four unanwsered goals sink Mustangs

Feb. 7: Queen's 4 Western 1

KINGSTON, Ont.- An early goal by the Western Mustangs was not enough, as the womens hockey team fell 4-1 to the Queen's Golden Gaels on Feb. 7 at the Kingston Memorial Centre.

Riding the emotion from a shoot out win the night before, the Mustangs scored early as captain Veronica Johnston (Oshawa, Ont.) potted one just 34 seconds into the game, with the pass coming off the stick of leading scorer Ellie Seedhouse (Whitby, Ont.).

It was all down there for the Mustangs though, as the Golden Gaels scored four straight, including an empty net goal in the dying seconds, to take the win.

Mustangs goaltender Jessica Ulrich (Keswick, Ont.) made 27 saves in the losing effort.

The game had huge playoff implications, as the loss certainly doesn't help the Mustangs chances of clinching a playoff berth. Currently, the team is an a dog-fight with the Brock Badgers for the sixth and final position, leading the Badgers by one point in the standings, though the Badgers have a game in hand.

The final test for the Mustangs of the regular season comes on Feb. 13 when they travel to Windsor to take on the Lancers at the South Windsor Arena. The game is seemingly a must-win for the Mustangs if they want to take their fate into their own hands in trying to clinch a playoff birth.
