Mustangs make short work of Windsor in 3-0 sweep

Jan. 28: Western 3 Windsor 0 (25-9, 25-18, 25-11)

LONODN, Ont. - The Western Mustangs swept away the Windsor Lancers in straight sets 3-0 on Friday night at Alumni Hall. The Mustangs won with set scores of 25-9, 25-18 and 25-11.

With the win the Mustangs improve to 15-2 on the season, while the Lancers drop to 7-10.

Garret May led the Mustangs attack with 16 kills. Sean McKay set up the Western attack with 33 assists, three solo blocks and five digs.

After giving up the first point of the game to the Lancers, the Mustangs went on an 8-1 run. Western used strong hitting to extend their lead to 20-7 forcing Windsor to call a timeout to try to regroup. Windsor could not respond and the Mustangs won 25-9. The Mustangs had 13 kills on just 21 attempts in the first set.

The second set started out a lot different as Windsor was able to battle with the Mustangs and Western held a slim 8-7 lead at the first technical timeout. Western took a 16-11 lead into the break off an ace from Garrett May. Windsor cut into the Mustangs lead but a Western timeout sparked the Mustangs and they took a 20-16 lead. An excellent dig by Poulin led to one of May's 11 kills in the set to get the final point to win the set 25-18.

Looking for the sweep the Mustangs started the third set out strong taking a 7-1 lead. Western remained in control throughout the set extending the lead to double-digits at 20-9. Substitute Luke Sim came into the game and promptly got two solo blocks with Poulin adding a solo block for the last three points of the game as the Mustangs won the third set 25-11.

The Mustangs will be back in action next weekend as they host Laurier and Waterloo on Feb. 4 and 5.
