Mustangs defeat Lancers in intense five set match

WES 3, WIN 2 (21-25, 25-20, 25-10, 21-25, 15-11

WINDSOR, Ont. – The No. 7 Western Mustangs, led by 16 kills from Mathew Waite, continued their undefeated streak (7-0) with a five set win (21-25, 25-20, 25-10, 21-25, 15-11) over the Windsor Lancers Friday night.

Waite tallied a total of 21 points on the night. Garrett May followed with 15 kills and 16 total points and Alan Screaton notched 10 kills and nine digs for a total of 14 total points.

The Mustangs dropped the first set 21-25 to the Lancers, then rallied back to take the second 25-20 and the third with a 25-10 spread. The Lancers rebounded by taking the fourth set 25-21 as Scott Hickman (St. Johns, Nfld.) earned five of the last seven points of the set. The fifth and deciding set (15-11) went to Western after a back-and-forth battle for the first ten points.

Kyle Williamson (Essex, Ont.), and Harrison Oake (Rodney, Ont.) and Ryan Le (Windsor, Ont.) rounded out the Lancer’s offense with 16, 15 and 12 points respectively.

Western returns to Alumni Hall on Friday, Nov. 25 to face Waterloo (3-3) at 8 p.m.
