Western falls short 4-3 in close final season game

Feb. 12: Guelph 4, Western 3

LONDON, Ont. - The Western Mustangs women's hockey team fell short in a 4-3 loss to the Guleph Gryphons on Feb.12 in Thompson Arena.

Western celebrated Senior Night on the women's final home game of the year. The honourees included captain and FISU member Ellie Seedhouse, who was also honoured for her place on World University Games Canadian Women's Hockey Team alongside Guelph's Jacalyn Sollis and Jessica Zerafa.

Mustangs goaltender Jessica Ulrich, forwards Taryn Brown, Brittany Buck, with defender Kailey Hooker and rightwinger Holly Ouellette were also among the Mustang Seniors being celebrated for their contributions to the Western Athletics Program.

"Lots of emotions going around right now," stated Seedhouse prior to the game as her and her teammates reflected on their season.

Ulrich was starting in net for the Mustangs after missing a couple games due to a sprained MCL. "It's been ok, I've been to physio everyday", she comments about her recovery. Ulrich had one shutout on the season and a solid .900 save percentage coming into the game.

Mustang goals were scored by Carly Rolph, Katie Dillon and Tawn Rellinger, with assists by Michelle Saunders, Ally Galloway and Tara Cation.

In the final season game for the Mustangs, the Gryphons notched the opening goal of the afternoon with a pass in front of the net to right winger, Mora, at 4:15 on the clock. Guelph followed up with an unassisted goal less than two minutes later. Western's Rolph was quick to respond with a breakaway goal through the legs of Siddall at 8:29 in the first. As gameplay continued, Guelph tipped a high shot in the right side of Ulrich for a third goal. Western followed up in hot pursuit as Galloway riffled the puck to Dillon, who tips it in for the Mustangs second goal of the afternoon with 35 seconds left in the period.

Mustangs put pressure on the Gryphons in the second as Emilie Canham pressed towards the Guelph zone. Saunders and Hooker held a strong defensive line, while Repath got a breakaway opportunity but was unable to add a point for Western. The scoreboard remained locked at 3-2 going into the third.

The third period began similar to the first, as Guelph used their turnover ability to wire a quick goal at 2:03. Following the goal, Saunder's aggression earned her a high sticking penalty. Western stood strong, with Rellinger turning over the puck to pocket a short-handed, unassisted goal less than a minute later. Guelph's 4-3 score advantage helped to increase the game momentum and led to double penalties being awarded with 15:01 on the clock. With thirty seconds left in the period, Mustangs pulled Ulrich for one last hopeful attempt to tie the game. Unfortunately, Western could not find a hole in the Gryphons net and the game closed at 4-3 for Guelph.

Despite the loss, the ending turned out to be bittersweet for Seedhouse, "Ending off on playing at the National level, I don't think I could go out on a better note. It's been a great experience."

Congratulations to the Western Mustangs Women's Hockey Team, who closed the season with a record of 6-19-1.
