LONDON, Ont. - The No. 3 nationally ranked Western Mustangs women's basketball team looks to stay on top of the OUA West as they host Brock and Guelph this weekend.
The Mustangs will face Brock at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 4 in Thames Hall. The women's game at 1 p.m. on Sat. Feb. 5 will be the fourth annual Shoot for a Cure fundraiser to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer.
The men's and women's doubleheader on Saturday will be a part of a family fun event as Western staff, faculty and their families will receive free admission, complimentary food, beverages, door prizes, contests and children's games.
Western is currently 14-2 with a half-game lead over Windsor for first place in the OUA West. Brock is tied with Lakehead for fourth place at 10-6 with Guelph in sixth at 8-8.
The Mustangs are averaging 72.9 points per game, and leading the OUA in both field goal and three-point field goal percentage at 45.7% and 36.9%.
Matteke Hutzler leads the offence with 14.2 points per game on 58% shooting. The Mustangs will have to shut down Brock's leading scorer Whitney Gorges's 13.6 points per game and Guelph's top player Samantha Russell's 11.8 points per game to pick up the wins this weekend.
Western will head on the road next week to take on McMaster on Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. Their next home game will be Feb. 12 against Waterloo at 1 p.m.
