Mustangs go 3-0 over Thanksgiving weekend

The Western Mustangs women’s lacrosse team remains undefeated (8-0) and captured three wins on the road this weekend. The team travelled to both McMaster and Toronto and displayed its depth and versatility against Guelph, Brock, and Toronto in a McMaster tournament and University of Toronto home game.

Western faced tough competition against Guelph, who opened the game with two quick goals to establish a lead. Unfazed, the Mustangs stuck with their original game strategy and took control to win 14 – 8.

Riding off of their first win of the weekend, and despite facing challenging weather conditions, Western was able to pull through yet again against Brock. Their victory was truly an effort of the entire team. Eleven different players contributed to a 17 – 6 win, with an especially strong performance from veteran Kelsey Crean, who scored three goals and made one assist during the game.

For the final game of the weekend, Western played the Toronto Varsity Blues on their own turf. Despite the Blues riding off of a noteworthy win over Queens earlier in the day – and support from a raucous crowd – the Mustangs took early control of the game.  They started with a 6-0 lead in the first fifteen minutes and sat at 10-1 after the first half. During the second half, Toronto challenged and picked up their pace, but strong goal tending, courtesy of Cait Mancuso, ensured Western maintained a comfortable lead. Scoring was lead with strong offensive performances from Michelle Farrugia with four goals and Emmi Morris with two goals.

The coaching staff was extremely pleased with the weekend, commenting “the team had a great stretch with solid contributions from everyone involved. Our depth continues to show through and gives us many options in the short and long term.”
