This weekend, the Western Mustangs women’s lacrosse team once again proved their depth of talent as a team driving for a successful 2012 season. With only a handful of games left in the regular season the Mustangs took to the road to face Laurier and McMaster.
Opening the weekend against the Laurier Golden Hawks, the Mustangs had a lot to prove after a close match-up (10-9), where the Mustangs just snuck by Laurier. Western rose to the occasion, opening the match with two strong goals. Laurier responded but at the 6:34 mark to tie the game 4-4, but not letting up Western seized control of the half scoring six goals and finishing at the first half up 10-5.The second half of the game was a demonstration of defensive strength led by captain, Lauren Crape. Holding the Golden Hawks to only two goals, the offense managed to put another five tidily away.
Top scorers of the game were Michelle Farrugia (4G), Tenyka Snider (4G, 1A), and Tawnie Johnson (3G). Coaches were pleased with the effort, noting the Mustangs’ “great chemistry and impressive team effort.”
Later in the day, Western squared off against the McMaster Marauders, handily taking control of the game scoring seven goals before McMaster could mount any offence. The Mustangs finished the half with a commanding 9-1 lead. The Mauraders doubled their offensive efforts in the second half, but were no match for Western as the Mustangs added another four goals in the second half to claim a 13-5 victory.
Freshmen Farrugia (2G, 2A), and Johnson (3G) played another outstanding game with many other Mustangs putting in strong performances such as Tasha MacDonald (3G, 3A) and Julie Van Wyk (2G). Western's defence proved reliable again in limiting the Marauders to only five goals. Coaches were very pleased with the strong team effort saying “we got off to a great start and moved the ball very well this afternoon. Again everyone contributed to a solid win.”
The Mustangs will spend the week preparing to play newcomers York and UOIT in Oshawa on Saturday in the final games of the regular season.
