Box Score The Western Mustangs women's hockey team had their first road game in Toronto last night, and in a tough-fought battle came up short with a 2-3 overtime loss. The Mustangs now sit at 3-1-1 after being outshot 29-38 to the Varsity Blues. Toronto scored with thirty seconds left in overtime play.
The Mustangs got off to a quick start on the powerplay two minutes into the game but could not capitalize a scoring opportunity. At seven minutes in, Toronto scored to go ahead 1-0, but the Stangs quickly recovered on another powerplay, this time finding the back of the net to tie the game. Western killed off a slashing penalty to Casey Rosen, and had a five on three powerplay opportunity late in the first, but Toronto's solid defense prevented a goal and the opening period finished at 1-1.
Rookie Jessica Ross scored into the second period, with a great assist from third-year defensemen Tara Cation. The period finished at 2-1 Stangs after two, with even shots on goal between both teams - Toronto with 20, the Mustangs with 18.
Western suffered some penalty trouble early in the third as third-year Ally Galloway was caught for slashing. The Varsity Blues capitalized on the powerplay to tie the game 2-2.
Overtime play was back and forth until a late Toronto goal that gave the Blues two points and the Mustangs one to climb up the league standings. The 'Stangs return home on October 27 at Thompson Arena for a game against York at 7pm.
